Internet Explorer Security Options - Advanced

Internet Explorer provides a convenient way to configure security just by setting the slider to the desired security value (low-medium-high). However, this does not provide the best degree of controlling Internet Explorer security options. But there is also Custom Level. Through using Custom Level you can configure Internet Explorer security options with a greater degree of control and flexibility and to assign different security levels to each function and control their behaviour individually.

Most security options settings in the Custom Level(Advanced) security options in Internet Explorer, have 3 different values: Disable, Enable, and Prompt. If Prompt is used, the user is being warned whenever the function is about to be used and he/she can choose whether to let it run or not.

In order to reach the advanced security options - Custom Level in Internet Explorer, you need to go to the menu, in Tools - Options = Security, select the desired security zone, and then click on Custom Level. In most cases the zone that you'd like customized would be the Internet security zone.

The Custom Level security options window also allows the user to reset Internet Explorer security settings to one of the 4 default security levels. Please note that while resetting security options to High will likely disable all functions, resetting them to low will have the opposite effect and most functions will be activated.

Finally, the user should be aware that setting the right security level and customizing security options may be tricky; there is quite a bunch of settings and since most users do not know what functions to disable or not, in most cases you have to go either by trial and error, or learn more about each option before trying to configure them. It is recommended that you start by setting security to the highest level, and then work your way down until the sites you are commonly using, work correctly. Please note though that setting security below Medium level may be very risky for your computer security. If you are not sure what to do, you would probably want to use the Trusted Sites zone and Restricted Sites zone to select individual security for certain sites based on the trust level you have for each of these sites.
